All Hallows Guild: Woods Walks and Bird Walks

Please join us for the following programs which focus on the Olmsted Woods Restoration launched by All Hallows Guild in 1997. The Guild, founded in 1916, is responsible “for the care and beautification of the Cathedral gardens and grounds.”

In fall 2008 a new Olmsted Woods program for group tours will be announced.

For the tours: Participants meet at the George Washington Statue on Pilgrim Road, which is on the south side of the Cathedral. Visitor parking is available in the Cathedral garage accessible off Wisconsin Avenue. No reservations are required and all programs are free. Programs will be cancelled in the event of heavy rain. Woodlands Information Line: (202) 537-2319. Please wear sturdy waterproof shoes.

Olmsted Woods Tours

The five-acre Olmsted Woods Restoration by All Hallows Guild was completed in 2007, after a ten-year process and more than 3 million dollars. Beginning in fall 2008, docents will discuss the three phases of restoration, with emphasis on the ecological concerns of the project. Why the restoration was necessary - water runoff, soil compaction, erosion and invasive plants - will be discussed, and solutions to these problems explained.

Native plants that are now thriving in the Woods and the newly completed All Hallows Guild Amphitheater will be pointed out, and a list of plants planted in the amphitheater will be available. Spring ephemerals will take center stage in April and May, trees and ferns in summer, foliage colors and fall blooming perennials in fall, and tree identification in winter.

For Olmsted Woods Tour Reservations: 202.537.2319.

All Hallows Guild docents look forward to greeting you and your club members in the Gardens or in the Woods.

Bird Walks

As the Olmsted Woods undergoes restoration a guiding principle is the inclusion of groundcovers, shrubs and trees attractive to birds and other wildlife. Join experienced birder Sheila Cochran, who will lead the Bird Walks.

Please wear sturdy waterproof shoes and bring your binoculars. Participants meet at the George Washington Statue on Pilgrim Road. No reservations are required and the Walks are free. Walks will be cancelled in the event of heavy rain. Information line: (202) 537-2319.
